Article: Meet Polly

Meet Polly

Polly came about after months of trawling the internet, hoping to find something special to put in my freshly decorated bedroom. I wanted something soft and feminine, nothing trendy, something inspired by historically glamorous women, you know, the ones you see in films, doing their makeup in light-rimmed mirrors. I wanted a stool to fit in a scene like that.

Alas, the internet didn’t deliver, so I decided to embroider a cushion with one of my illustrations. I didn’t want the stool to be too old-fashioned, so, harnessing the skills of a friend, I had him shape some aluminium to match my amateur sketch, a modern material to sit alongside my more vintage-inspired design. She now sits in the corner of my room, I put my socks on in that corner with her help, and the rest of the time I look at her lovingly.

Polly was named after my good friend with whom I speak most days. Polly is one of those friends that you have multiple-year voice note conversations with, my most supportive friend when I said I wanted to launch “something”. I send her ideas, she enthusiastically encourages and together we chat about almost anything, from how terrible that film was, to what celebrities are doing to their faces, to our biggest dreams (mainly ones based in foreign locations).

I hope you like the Polly stool as much as I enjoyed creating her.
